What are you taking?

The question I get asked most what did I take or what am I taking. " I have a friend named Jack and he knows a guy who sells magic seeds". There's no supplement or medication that's going to fix your weight. The key to supplements is they are made to supplement what your lifestyle. Drinking a replacement meal shake isn't going to help if you are taking in more calories than you are burning per day.

With that being said when I first started I didn't take any supplements. Slowly I started researching and experimenting with different supplements. During my first year the supplements I felt effective for me included fish oil and protein powder. Protein is about as important as water to your body and fish oil is good for your joints.

If you want to lose weight it comes down to burning more calories than you consume daily. Most people count all of their macros and I did for a while. Personally I feel calorie count is most important. If your body only burns x amount of calories and you are consuming xx amount of calories you simple math says you'll gain weight.

Good bye Pepsi, Coke, and Sprite

At this point im up to about 30 minutes of cardio working up a sweat. Although the calorie burn status on the cardio machine isn't accurate I use it to get a rough general idea. On this day I did some "serious work" burned 250 calories. I'm thinking to myself man 30 mins of cardio 250 calories that's got to be close to a pound of fat burned... WRONG! I searched how many calories burned are needed to burn a lb of fat. The answer 3,500 or 7 hours of cardio. I needed to increase my cardio but was physically limited and needed to find another answer to get under my goal of 300lbs. Previously I'd been given the option for bypass surgery given that I quit drinking soda for life. I couldn't give up soda but I can cut down. Instead of 2-3 sodas for dinner ( even more when I ate out) I drank 1 soda. With soda containing roughly 150 calories cutting out 1-2 sodas was equal to doing 15-30 mins of cardio. Now I'm thinking if I can give up soda completely fo...

The reason for my blog

I met a guy returning a pack of socks because he was pre diabetic and his Dr told him he can't wear the socks. After looking the guy in the eyes I told him I used to be pre diabetic. The look on his face was of disbelief and shock as he told me no way you look perfectly fine and healthy. Back then I was 338 lbs, had high cholesterol, elevated liver enzymes, depression, sleep apnea, and medications for each one of them. Aside from that I had torn my lateral and medial meniscus and had to wear a custom made knee brace that would be with me for the rest of my life.    When talking about the brace he asked what happened to it and what was my reaction when i first got it. How can I tell this stranger the truth? Embarrassed I told him I went home and had to live with it. Truth is I went home and fell asleep on the couch feeling sorry for myself and crying. Not only was the brace embarrassing wearing over your pants it was also uncomfortable .    Hav...

First Workouts

The   time had come I joined a local gym. Nerves and anxiety were through the roof. The feeling of not belonging somewhere was at an all time high. What was I doing there?    My first workout 15 minutes of cardio on an elliptical machine at the lowest level. Followed by a hour of roaming around machines and trying to figure how to use them. Eventually I'd work my way up to free weights but for now machines were going to be my best friend.    As the week's went on my cardio improved. Every workout  I'd aim for 1 more minute of cardio until I reached 30 mins. My weight sets (still on machines) increased from 3 sets of 6 to 3 sets of 8. Once I hit 3 sets of 10 my next goal was to go 4 sets of 10 and work my way up until I can hit 5 sets of 20. Remember I'm doing light weights.     The weight loss didn't come right away but more importantly I started feeling better about myself. Sometimes the pain in my knee would slow me down...
